The Mountlake Terrace Police Department is an integral part of a residential community in South Snohomish County that was incorporated in 1954. With a population of 21,980, in approximately four square miles, it is one of the more densely populated suburban communities in the area. The city is in a state of transition as the downtown is being revitalized with a Town Center Plan, several transit projects and a light rail link. The growth, the change, and the proximity to Seattle make Mountlake Terrace an ideal place to start a career. The Department is currently compromised of 28 commissioned officers and 8 civilian staff. Mountlake Terrace Police Department has a dedication to community involvement, with programs such as the Community Outreach Program, National Night Out, Shop with a Cop, and Tour de Terrace.

Beyond normal patrol duties, officers are provided with the opportunity to seek specialty positions, such as:
- Detectives
- Violent Offenders Task Force Detective
- K-9 Officer
Officers can also be apart of collateral assignments responsible for training and other police functions, such as:
- Firearms Instructor
- Defensive Tactics Instructor
- Field Training Officer (FTO)
- Drug Recognition Expert (DRE)
- Emergency Vehicle Operations Course Instructor (EVOC)
- School Liaison Officers
- UAS (Drone) Team
- SWAT Team
- Target Zero Task Force
