Business Licenses

City of Mountlake Terrace Business Licensing
The City of Mountlake Terrace requires all businesses located within the city limits, or those conducting business within the city limits, to be licensed with the city.

Mountlake Terrace participates in the State Business Licensing Service partnership. This is a combined licensing system through the Department of Revenue, making it easier, for most businesses, to connect state and local requirements in one annual transaction. For fast service, apply for a business license at the Department of Revenue (DOR) business page.  Below are descriptions of licenses available in the City of Mountlake Terrace. A list of city requirements and fees are also located on the Department of Revenue website.

Home Occupation Licenses
To operate a business from your Mountlake Terrace residence, and prior to obtaining a business license, a Home Occupation permit approval may be necessary. To determine whether your business requires a Home Occupation approval, please contact the Planning Department. After the Home Occupation Application is submitted to our Permit Center at City Hall and approved, you will need to apply for a City Business License through the Department of Revenue business page. Any additional questions regarding the home occupation process can be directed to the Permit Center.

Residential Rental Licenses
If you are located within Mountlake Terrace city limits and wish to rent units in your home or on your property, a city license application through the Department of Revenue website is required. If the rental is separate from the main house, you will need to submit an Accessory Dwelling Unit Application. If you are renting within your home a Residential Rental Units Business License Application, through Community and Economic Development, is required.

Adult Family Home Licenses
If you are located within Mountlake Terrace city limits and wish to license an Adult Family Home, a city license application through the Department of Revenue website needs to be obtained. Additionally, an Adult Family Home Application through Community and Economic Development, and a Certificate of Occupancy Application need to be submitted to the city.

Business License for a Nonprofit
If you are located within Mountlake Terrace city limits and operating a nonprofit, a city business license application through the Department of Revenue website must be obtained. You will need to sign up for a General Business License and pay a fee. At this time the fee is a partnership issue that is being addressed. We ask that you please pay the fee and email proof of your 501c3 status as well as the confirmation number to businesslicense@mltwa.gov. A refund will be processed to return the fee amount paid.

Ambulance Drivers and Attendants
In addition to applying/renewing your Business License with the Department of Revenue, the City of Mountlake Terrace also requires a separate form to be submitted per Chapter 5.05 MTMC for each Ambulance Driver and Attendant. Please complete and submit the Ambulance Attendant Certificate Application, along with applicable fees, to businesslicense@mltwa.gov
